John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men - 1459 Words
In of Mice and Men the characters in the play are interrelated to loneliness and violence through the foreshadowing of events and the segregation between contradicting minorities and the ââ¬ËGod-likeââ¬â¢, more respected characters; which links to events in the 1930s. Steinbeck portrays society as times of disseminated families and maladroitness in the economy. The Great Depression was when the American stock market crashed in 1929 which subsequently left thousands economically deprived and diminished thus leaving them situated in lands of squalor and poverty. As a result, millions of people were left unemployed and their quality of life severely dropped. Therefore, because unemployment rates rose communities were scattered as there were lots ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Further to this, Carlson explaining itââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"that dog ainââ¬â¢t no good to himself foreshadows the latter events when George is hit with the climax of circumstances, George, remembers the words ââ¬ËGeorge, I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldnââ¬â¢t ought to of let no stranger shoot my dogââ¬â¢ which reoccurs to him as a parental figurehead that he should shoot Lennie himself before the brutality of the ranch workers would kill Lennie. Also, Soledad which means Solitude in Spanish accompanies the major theme of loneliness in the society as it is based around the lives of migrant itinerant workers; ââ¬Å"Guys like us that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world.â⬠This is also a metaphor for the other large proportion of marginalised labouring men looking for work to sustain a living. In of Mice and Men the American Dream is a symbol of hope yet oppression. The dream offers hope but its power is overwhelming. Even Candy and Crooks are drawn to the idea. However, the disappointment when the dream ends is crushing. Itââ¬â¢s also a false panacea as itââ¬â¢s not really achievable but itââ¬â¢s all they have. It has a unifying effect and creates a bond between the characters, also explaining a part beyond Lennie and Georgeââ¬â¢s relationship. The prospect of the American Dream soothes the characters as from a result of the great depression people were living in hardship and in reality had ââ¬Å"nothing to look ahead toâ⬠, therefore in

Electrochemical Cell EMF Example Problem
The cell electromotive force, or cell EMF, is the net voltage between the oxidation and reduction half-reactions taking place between two redox half-reactions. Cell EMF is used to determine whether or not the cell is galvanic. This example problem shows how to calculate the cell EMF using standard reduction potentials. The Table of Standard Reduction Potentials is needed for this example. In a homework problem, you should be given these values or else access to the table. Sample EMF Calculation Consider the redox reaction: Mg(s) 2 H(aq) ââ â Mg2(aq) H2(g)a) Calculate the cell EMF for the reaction.b) Identify if the reaction is galvanic.Solution:Step 1: Break the redox reaction into reduction and oxidation half-reactions.Hydrogen ions, H gain electrons when forming hydrogen gas, H2. The hydrogen atoms are reduced by the half-reaction:2 H 2 e- ââ â H2Magnesium loses two electrons and is oxidized by the half-reaction:Mg ââ â Mg2 2 e-Step 2: Find the standard reduction potentials for the half-reactions.Reduction: E0 0.0000 VThe table shows reduction half-reactions and standard reduction potentials. To find E0 for an oxidation reaction, reverse the reaction.Reversed reaction:Mg2 2 e- ââ â MgThis reaction has a E0 -2.372 V.E0Oxidation - E0ReductionE0Oxidation - (-2.372 V) 2.372 VStep 3: Add the two E0 together to find the total cell EMF, E0cellE0cell E0reduction E0oxidationE0cell 0.0000 V 2.372 V 2.372 VStep 4: Determine if the reaction is galvanic.
